Atlus Gone

August 30, 2010

The game developing company Atlus, who brought us game series like Shin Megami Tensei/Persona/and the up coming title Catherine, was just announced to be merged with Index Holdings this October 1st, 2010.  This turn of event is due to Atlus’ economic problem that they have been suffering for many years.

Index Holdings is famous for being a mobile phone game developing company, and the parent company of anime studio Madhouse.

They say this merge does not mean the end of Atlus.  It has also been announced that future game releases by the consolidated company will continue to use the “Atlus” name.  As a representative said the brand will still exist with future games published, but Atlus will no longer be listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

This merge will allow Index Holdings’ new team to leverage Atlus’ IP library such as Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, and Trauma Center. Just a few weeks ago, Persona 3 Social was announced for cell phones.

We will most likely see sequels of the SMT and Persona titles since they are the biggest money maker in Atlus, but wether Western players will get any of those future titles are still unknown.  (We most likely will)

Not really follow gaming that much. I have seen some of Persona and loved the figures that were designed from that game. I am seeing more and more companies merging together. Make you wonder where it will all end up in the next 20 years.

One big company monopoly the gaming industry? maybe? LOL I hope that doesnt happen. Just imagine Sony and Microsoft merging together makes me shiver… PS- I’m a PS fanboy, so sorry.
